Introducing Justin Trinkley, an Analyst here at B2C2. After joining in February, Justin dove right in, taking advantage of the opportunity to learn from and even collaborate with several different teams. A true crypto-die hard at heart, Justin was exploring crypto long before joining the team and enjoys bringing that expertise to B2C2. Continue reading to learn about his favorite parts of the crypto world and how he continues learning in his role at B2C2.
What were you doing before you joined B2C2?
I was attending Temple University for a BBA in Finance. I initially graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a BS in Kinesiology, and found I had a passion for finance and markets in my free-time while working as a front-office manager at a boutique hotel in Philadelphia. I was laid off during the initial wave of Covid in 2020 and used it as an opportunity to go back to school for something I really enjoyed.
What was your experience with crypto before you joined B2C2?
In 2016, I had a roommate in college who was using his tuition to trade BTC. At the time, I was running a business on Ebay reselling goods from graduating students, and I decided to allocate a significant amount of that capital towards trading. I traded on Binance and quickly became immersed in the ETH ecosystem a few years later.
What has struck you as unique at B2C2? What is your favorite thing about working at B2C2?
Everyone is heard. I began in an operations role and given my knowledge of the cryptocurrency landscape, I quickly interacted with people from numerous departments at all seniority levels from middle management to C-Suite. This wasn’t something I was asked to do, but something that I actively wanted to be a part of and that was recognized by my peers immediately.
Describe a “normal” day at B2C2 for you.
This is a tricky question, as my day-to-day is constantly changing. I assist with everything from treasury management to assisting clients with onboarding tasks and settlements. I also help with optimizing internal procedures, cryptocurrency protocol research for new coin listings, and business development.
How would you describe B2C2’s culture?
B2C2 has a very robust and healthy culture. B2C2 has the exact culture you'd want and expect from an institution dealing with digital assets: the intellectual curiosity to get involved with new ideas early, the intellectual fortitude to not only understand those ideas, but to perfect them, and the intellectual openness to find the best path to walk down.
What is one thing you will take away from your experience at B2C2?
I think the biggest takeaway from my experience at B2C2 is that everyone is able to learn if they are willing to. Given we have a relatively flat hierarchical structure, I am able to learn about different business facets from individuals across different departments.
What is something you find inspiration from?
I’m a big believer that knowledge is the only thing that cannot be taken away from you. My inspiration to grow comes from a core belief instilled by my parents that if you’re not willing to learn, you’ll remain stagnant in both your personal and professional life.
If you had to have a career completely unrelated to what you are doing now, what would you do?
I love RTS games. I was introduced to Starcraft by my uncle when I was younger, and quickly grew into loving games like League of Legends. I think being a professional gamer would be a pretty sweet gig.
What excites you the most about the future of crypto?
I'm among the first set of people to realize that DeFi helps optimize real-world problems - not just P2P transactions, but taking it a step further. While I think that there’s a significant amount of work that needs to be done to make DeFi safe and easy to use for the rest of the world, there’s a genuine use-case for things like overcollateralized instant loans. I also think that NFTs help reduce redundancies in processes like asset transfers and authentication.
What is your favorite part of the crypto community?
The community. There’s no better feeling than connecting with people globally with respect to something you enjoy.
Biggest “crypto memory” you have?
Joining the Yuga Labs Otherside beta was awesome. It was wild to see so many people interacting with each other using nascent technology. It also hardened my belief that the crypto industry would continue to grow and prosper.
What’s something you would say to someone considering entering the crypto industry?
Read. Read. Read. The biggest misconception is that it is an industry with infinite returns. If you want to join, read Satoshi’s BTC whitepaper and check out the Ethereum Foundations website. Don’t blindly trade an asset because someone said it’s going to the moon.
Also, you’re going to get “rugged”. That is part of your initiation and it’s likely to happen more than once. It’s happened to me more times than I can count.
